Irony means incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. When Mme. Loisel husband stated "Im going", he said "back the whole distance we came on foot, to see if I cannot find it.And he went out. She stayed there, in her ball dress, without strength to go to bed, overwhelmed, on a chair, without a fire, without a thought.
Her husband came back about seven o’clock. He had found nothing. pg 77- 80 That shows Situational Irony when something happens and you expect something. Mme.Loisel expected her husband to find something but he didnt. I think if she didnt expect so much or have to have so much that wouldnt have happened in the first place. Everythimg is her fault and she should feel dumb because she just now told her friend the truth.

Irony- a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated. Verbal Irony "Yes, of course." She flung herself on her friend's breast, embraced her frenziedly, and went away with her treasure. (Paragraph 4)The way irony is used in the story is by the author write what the character says and meant in the story.

Irony is when the exact opposite of what you think is going to happen, happes. She took off the garments in which she had wrapped her shoulders, so as to see herself in all her glory before the mirror. But suddenly she uttered a cry. The necklace was no longer round her neck!ns.

In the story, "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, irony is use all trough the story. There are 3 types of irony. Verbal irony (also called sarcasm) is when a writer makes a statement in which the actual meaning differs from the meaning that the words appear to express. Situational irony is an accidental events occur that seem oddly appropriate, such as the poetic justice of a TV weather presenter getting caught in a surprise rainstorm. Dramatic irony is a narrative in which the reader knows something about present or future circumstances that a character in the story does not know. The irony is the fact that the woman worked her entire life to buy a necklace for the woman after it was lost to find out later on that the necklace she had lost and spent all that time trying to replace was fake. This shows in the end of the story "Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was worth at the very most five hundred francs! . . . "Also, the fact that the woman had merely wanted to wear the jewelry to make herself look more pretty and rich for the party...If she hadn't of asked her friend to let her borrow the jewelry, she would never have ruined her life by trying to make up for what she had done earlier on. This lady was actually benevolent but she just wanted to be rich. The fact that the woman is poor and couldn’t have the luxuries she wanted harrowed her life.

Irony is the general term for literacy techniques that portray the differences between apperence and reality. The three types of irony are dramatic, situational, and verbal.
Dramatic is the contradiction between a character thoughts and what the reader knows to be true. Situational irony is an event that occurs directly and contradicts the expectation of character, reader, or the audience. There is also verble irony which is the words use to suggest the oppisite of what is meant. In the story "The Necklace" by Guy De Maupassant..irony is use in the story may be verbal because the narrator states
"She was one of those pretty and charming girls, born by a blunder of destiny in a family of employees."...... "She was simple since she could not be adorned; but she was unhappy as though kept out of her own class" (par. 1-2). The narrator did not in fact say whom of which "she" is, so by eliminating the pronouns may be unlikely to happen.

Madam Loisel expected her husband to find something but he didn't. I think that she should not expect so much from her husband. She is dissappointed and its her fault because she expected to mush from someone so little.

In "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, irony is a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an itention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or outwardly stated. Three types of irony are verbal, when an author says one thing and means another, dramatic, when the audience perceives something that the character does not know, and of situation, when there is a discrepensy between the expect result and the actual result. Irony of the situation is a type of irony displayed in the story. Madame Loisel expected to be happy getting the worse or less out of life since she never really expected anything. "She had no marriage portion, no expectations, no means of getting known, understood, loved, and wedded by a man of wealth and distinction..." The actual results were that she was unhappy and wanted a life of leisure. "She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury. She suffered from the poorness of her house,...", "The sight of the little Breton girl who came to do the work in her little house aroused heart-broken regrets and hopeless dreams in her mind.", and "but she was as unhappy as though she had married beneath her;...".

Irony is the opposite of the inevitable.
Verbal irony is when words are used to suggest the opposite of what is meant. Situational irony is an event that occurs that directly contradicts the expectations of the characters, the reader,or the audience. And Dramatic irony is contradiction between what a character thinks and what a reader or audience knows to be true.

In "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, situational irony was used at the ending of the story. “Oh, my poor Mathilde. But mine were false. At most they were worth five hundred francs!”, shows that the trouble of paying for the necklace was in vain because the one Mme. Forester had was fake. Even I'd be disappointed if I didn't know from the beginning.

Irony is something that is incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. In the story "The Necklace" by Guy de Mausppasant, irony is used when Mathilde and her husband pays off thirty-four thousand francs for a necklace that wasn't worth all of that money, beacause she lost the necklace while leaving a ball.(page 6-8). My comment is that Mathilde felt dumb because she broke her back tryning to pay off the debt for the diamond necklace, when she should have just admited to her friend that she had lost the necklace, that would have changed the sorrowness for the last ten years.

Irony is something that is incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. The 3 types of irony is dramatic, verbal, situational. The irony that happen in the story was when Doodle dies which is situational irony. The reason why I say that is because Doodle is thought of to be nothing or useless but defies the odds by walking but then unfortunately dies. I feel that its ironic because it really isn't expected for it to happen. He finally learns to walk but then dies? That's just insane to me but thats the irony of it all.

In the story,"The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, irony can best be described as the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning. The different types of irony are verbal, dramatic, and situational. The narrator uses situational irony in the story through these statements,"In a shop at the Palais-Royal they found a string of diamonds which seemed to them exactly like the one they were looking for. It was worth forty thousand francs. They were allowed to have it for thirty-six thousand; Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was worth at the very most five hundred francs!(pghs.41 and 66)" This is an example of irony because the necklace wasn't worth the money Madame Loisels and her husband paid. I can connect with this situation because I have misplaced someones item and I went to the store to buy that item and the next day i went to school they had more than one of that item, so basically i just waisted my money and my time.

Irony is the humorous or scornful use of words to express the opposite of what one really means.

    .Verbal
    .Dramatic
    .Situational

Dramatic occured in the story because the main character Madame Loisel was trying to find her necklace after the party took place. Her husband was going every location of the town to trying find the necklace. In paragraph 7, it talks about how Loisel had struggled to make ends meet cleaning floors, washing dishes, and doing laduary to get the money to buy a new necklace for the merchant who sold it to her. My respone in this story was that some things in life that we borrow from somebody for a big event or anything maybe not that crutal in the end.

When she learned it was a fake she had spent ten years of her life workin.I think that is ironic. When i was a little kid I had grabed my cousin's "phone" and droped it in the toilet. I had been hiding form him for atleast a month. He later told me that it was a toy

The three types of irony are; Verbal, Dramatic, and Situational. I choose Dramatic because, she's worried about getting an rich and wealthy man and she's truing to lead the reader to understand an incongruity between a her and finding well-heeled man, while the characters in the short story remain unaware of the incongruity. On pages 1-2, she said, "She had no marriage portion, no expectations, no means of getting known, understood, loved, and wedded by a man of wealth and distinction; and she let herself be married off to a little clerk in the Ministry of Education". I can associate with this irony because, some people have dramatic times in life where people want to have an wealthy woman or man to complete his/her life.

In the story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant (the author) astutely uses irony to keep the reader interest. Irony is the use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of it's literal meaning. There are three types of irony with similar meanings. First, there is dramatic irony, which is when the reader knows more than the main character. Second, there is verbal irony which, is the contrast of what is said and meant by a character. Finally, there is situational irony which, is the contrast of what happens in the story and what the reader expects to happen. In the story "The Necklace" the author uses situational irony on page 2 line 37 "No; there is nothing more humiliating then to look poor amoung alot of rich women." The reader can conclude that the husband will give a suggestion to get the wife to stop crying in a benevolent tone. At the end of the story the author uses verbal irony on page 6 line 128 when the story said "Oh, my poor Mathrilde. But mine were false. At most they were worth five hundred francs!" The author has a prodigy way of using irony, that keeps the readers attention.

Verbal- is when the author says one thing but it means something different.
Dramatic- when words and actions posses a significance that the listerner or audience understands but the speaker or characters dont understand.
Situational- when the result of an action goes bad and the character has to figure out how to make it better.
In the story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, the author uses situational irony because in paragraphs 5 and 6 when she had lost her necklace, her and Loisel(her husband) had to find it. After many days of looking, they saw at a store, a necklace just like the one she lost. So they had to pay a lot of money to get it back. Close to the end of the sroty Madame Forester and Mrs. Loisel meet again and Mrs. Loisel tells Mme. Forester the true. With that, Mme. Forester Tell Mrs. Loisel that the necklace were fake and weren't worth much and that to me is situational irony because I, the reader, couldn't draw conclusion or infasize what is going to happen. I thought that she would be mad that she lost it then replace and then waited for 10 years to finally tell her.

"I...I...I've no longer got Madame Forestier's necklace...."(pp.5) I thought at first Madame Loisel was going to return the necklace as soon as she left the ball, but instead Madame Loisel lost them on there way home."It was Madame Forestier, still young, still beautiful, still attratctive."(pp.7) I foreshadowed that since Madame Loisel had felt guilty of giving Madame Forestier the necklace that was not originally hers, she would never see her again."Madame Loisel looked old now."(pp.7) I was shocked to learn that she aged so much because of all the hard she put in to pay off the necklace. I always shock others when I do things because people expect me to be anti-social and rude when actually I'm a very outgoing and silly person.

But she wasn't her night of happyness turned into her worst nightmare. After that night Madame Loisel's happyness evanesced. There's all ways something bad out of something good, and Madame Loisel learned the hard way. Irony is incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. The 3 types of irony is dramatic, verbal, situational. In the story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, the part of irony that is being used is situational irony, because she lost the necklace in that created a problem.I . . . I . . . I've no longer got Madame Forestier's necklace. . . ."
    He started with astonishment.
    "What! . . . Impossible!"

Irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning. There are three types of irony would be “Verbal, Dramatic and Situational.”The type of irony I would choose for this story would be Dramatic Irony. I would choose this one because I believe its dramatic the way Madame Loisel and husband work 10 years of their lives really hard to pay off a necklace. That wasn’t worth what they first thought it was, when Madame Loisel had lost the necklace she and her husband looked for a necklace the same in many jewelry stores until they finally found one that was worth 40,000 franks. The couple had o other choice but to pay for the lost necklace, it took them 10yrs to do it but they did it. Until afterwards they find out that the necklace wasn’t worth 40,000 franks but only 5,000 franks, flashbacking back at all the work they did in vain.

Irony is basicly the oppisite and there are three types of irony, dramatic, verbal, and situational irony. Dramatic irnoy occurs when we, the reader, know more than the characters in the story. Verbal irony is the contrast between what is said by a character and what is meant by a character(often uses sarcasm). Situational irony is the contrast between what happens in a story and what is expected to happen by the reader. In the story,"The Necklace",pages 6-8, irony is used when Mathilde and her husband pays off thirty-four thousand francs for a necklace that wasn't worth all of that money, beacause she lost the necklace while leaving a ball.

Irony is a literary or rhetorical device in which there is incongruity discordance, or unintendedness that goes beyond the most evident meaning. In the "Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, situational irony occurs when the main charcter, Madame Loisel lost the necklace that she borrowed from a lady.
"She took off the garments in which she wrapped her shoulders, so as to see herself in her glory before the mirror. But suddenly she uttered a cry.The necklace was no longer around her neck!" That to me is big situation. She knew she had to pay it back but when she did she found out that the necklace was just a fake.

Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of there litertial meaning. The three types of irony are verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony. Verbal irony is a state that represents something in words. Situational irony is a outcome that ends up being diffrent from what is expected to happen the diffrence between what is expected to happen and what does happen. Dramatic irony is is when the words and actions of the characters of a work of literature have a different meaning for the reader than they do for the characters. a example of irony used in the story is verbal Irony "She flung herself on her friend's breast, embraced her frenziedly, and went away with her treasure." This was found in Paragraph 4. I think this is an example of irony because is chose what the aurthor writes what the character is saying and what he is trying to say in the story.

Irony means the thought between what might be expected and what actually occurs. There is three types of irony verbal, dramatic, situational.
Verbal is the contrast between what is said and what is meant.
Dramatic is the contrast between what the character thinks is true and what the reader know is true.
Situational is the contrast between what happens and what was expected.
In the story "The Necklace" by Guy De Maupassant. The lady lost the necklace"I . . . I . . . I've no longer got Madame Forestier's necklace. . . ." (p.5). The lady and her husband looked for the necklace or one like it. They found one tha was forthirty-six thousand francs. But at the end they found out that the necklace wasn't real an was cheap. "Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was worth at the very most five hundred francs! . . . " (p.8). I would have told the lady that I have lost the necklace. I would have been real sad an I would of asked her if there is anyway that I can help to get it back. That would have been better than buying one that is worth way more money than the origanal.

Irony is the words that convey the opposite of their literal meaning;a statement or situation where the meaning is contradicted by the appearance or presentation of the idea, their are three types of irony:verbal, situational, and dramatic. In "The Necklace"by Guy de Maupassant, situational irony ocurres in the story when Madame Loisel want to look pretty and elegant but she does not have anything, her husband gave her money but it would only be for the dress soon before the big day she was sad because she had no jewlery to where her husband told her to ask her friend Madame Forestier to let her borrow some jewlery,Loisel saw the diamond necklace and borrowed it,at the party she had it on,after the party at home she did not have the diamond necklace."The...the...the necklace-it's gone(p.144)".She did not know she would loose the necklace, soon the lost necklace became the vortex in the story,it took them ten yrs. to pay a new necklace which she later found out the necklace was false.Things don't always come out the way you want them to.Unfortunately in this story things were only kind of good at first and later they got worst as days progressed only to find out in the end that everything could of been very different than what they really came out to be.

irony is is the contrast expressed or watched
DRAMATIC-occurs when we, the reader know more than the story
VERBAL-is the contrast between what is said by a character. Takes form of sarcasm
SITUTIONAL-the contrast between what happens in a story and what is expected to happen by the reader.

The story is situational because it gives you steps presenting the outcome of expectation"Wait-you silly thing! Why don't you go and see Madame Forestier and ask her to lend you some jewelry. You certainly know her well enough for that, don't you think?" She let out a joyful cry." I think she's stuck up women that needs to have a valuable lesson. Which she got at the end of the story.

Irony is what you expect to happen and what actualy happens. In the story 'The Neckless" by Guy de Maupascant, the author uses situational irony to stay how the neckless came about, how it got lost, and how madame Loisel found out it was fake."Why don't you go see Madame Forestier and ask her to lend you some jewlrey. You right. It never occured to me." "The neckless its gone. What did you say ?..... What!.... Impossible ! " "" Oh, poor, poor Mathilde! Mine was false.Mathilde got what she deserve, now she realizes that fitting in with the other women wasn't worth the time.

Irony is the opposite of a literal meaning. Verbal irony is words expressing exact opposites. Dramatic irony means that an audience knows more than the characters. Situational irony means that a situation turns out differently than expected. Sarcasm is a type of verbal irony that is a mocking, often ironic or satinical remark intended to wound. In the story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, situational irony occured because I didn't expect the necklace to be fake and only worth five hundred francs. The loss of that necklace turned the Loisels into paupers. They incessantly worked to replace something that wasn't even worth much. Evidence of this is shown when Mme. Forestier says "Oh, my poor Mathilde! Mine were false. It was worth five hundred francs at the most!"(pg. 148)
